Building the Future, One Generation at a Time

Our Legacy of Service and Innovation over 113 Years!

In 1912, in the heart of Watsonville, California, a young couple with big dreams and modest means laid the foundation for what would become a cornerstone of their community. With just a bicycle, a five-foot ladder, and $100 in cash, John Stanovich and Edith DuFour Stanovich opened the doors of Central Electric Company inside the Central Hotel on Main Street. At a time when electric lighting was still a novelty and demand for electrical work was sparse, their courage and vision sparked something enduring. As electricity slowly gained acceptance, so did their business. They began offering not just wiring services, but also the latest household innovations—irons, washing machines, and toasters. The technology of the day was knob-and-tube wiring, protected by 30-amp glass fuses, a far cry from today’s standards.

Built to Last: A Legacy of Family, Grit, and Innovation

From Main Street to Milestones—

By 1916, the company had outgrown its humble beginnings and moved to the Pajaro Valley Bank building. Two years later, Edith’s son Alfred DuFour became an electrician, continuing the family’s legacy. In 1925, Central Electric settled into a new home at 307 Main Street, where it would remain for the next 62 years. Alfred officially joined the company in 1926, and by 1938, he had taken the reins. The business weathered the Great Depression and World War II, even pivoting to sell china and crystal when copper shortages made electrical contracting difficult. In 1958, Alfred’s son Steve DuFour joined the team, and by 1961, he became a partner alongside his father. That same year, Joan DuFour also joined the business, making it a true family affair. Together, they celebrated the company’s 50th anniversary in 1962.

A Legacy of Growth and Innovation

From family roots to million-dollar milestones!

As the years passed, the company evolved. In 1968, Steve and Joan sold the China division of Central Electric to Ford’s Department Store, refocusing entirely on electrical contracting. In 1979, their son-in-law Tony Kulich joined the company, followed by incorporation in 1986 and a move to 430 Walker Street in 1987—the same year they celebrated 75 years of service. The next generation continued the tradition. Sharon Jurach joined in 1989, followed by Patty Kulich in 1991. In 1997, Central Electric completed its first million-dollar project for Harmony Foods, and in 1998, the company was featured as the cover story in National Electrical Contractor Magazine.

One Wire....One Connection....One Generation at a Time.....

The Family Business Continues..

Then, in 2024, after more than four decades of dedicated service, Patty and Tony Kulich retired, closing the shop at 430 Walker Street. But the story didn’t end there. Today, Central Electric has come full circle. Just as it began over a century ago with one man and a dream, it is now a one-man shop once again—run by their son, Michael Kulich, who carries forward the legacy of innovation, resilience, and family pride. From a bicycle and a ladder to multimillion-dollar projects, Central Electric Company has lit up homes, businesses, and hearts for over 113 years. And its story continues—one wire, one connection, one generation at a time.
